fix: improve error handling and type safety

- Replaced 'any' types with proper TypeScript types
- Improved error handling with instanceof checks
- Removed unused imports (calculateExpectedTeamScore)
- Updated error messages to be more descriptive
- Removed deprecated eslint.config.mjs file
